About Me
John Frank Sabado
Visual Artist
Sabado’s journey with nature started when he was a young boy at the heart of a logging concession in Mankayan town in Benguet swearing when the chainsaws hit the trees, he could hear them scream.
Growing up within a logging concession Sabado was surrounded with Mother Nature, making the mountains his playground and seeing at a young age how man made use of natural resources “Nature is the best nanny.”
His younger days were filled with trips to the forests of the highlands, caves and a basic commune with the earth empowering his artistic mission today in saving Mother Earth through his work.
Sabado considers Culture as his weapon to combat ecological destruction “Culture is the only weapon we can use to save what is left of Mother Earth.”
Sabado’s work is a collection of pieces depicting the state of the earth today and how man can salvage what is left of it, done in both pen and ink as well as canvas.
The mixed media works are tinted with hues of the Earth aimed to show the contrast of urban and rural life with tinges of bright yellow and blue cast in a string signifying the loom weaving industry of the Cordillera.
Sabado is known for this intricate artworks with themes that draw inspirations from Cordillera culture and beyond.
In 2000, he was a recipient of the 13 Artist Award of the Cultural Center f the Philippines. In 2001, he was a Juror’s Choice in the Philippine Art Awards and finalist to the 2002 ASEAN Art Awards in Bali, Indonesia. He was a Finalist to the Philippine Art Awards in 2003 and 2013.
